The world of X-treme Enduro is growing by another event. The Red Bull Sea to Sky! The first of the new 2-day races took place in the Antalya region in Turkey starting October 8th, 2011. The race is likely to become part of the World Extreme Enduro Championship (WXEC) in the near future. Martin “Frejn” Freinademetz: "The mountains around Kemer are perfect for this kind of race, the local Enduro club is extremely motivated, the authorities are supporting Enduro like other cities support football and with a long term partner like Red Bull weexpect a great future for this race."
Thousands of spectators came to watch the international elite of extreme Enduro protagonists in a field of 83 riders from 15 different nations: Extreme Enduro "Dominator" Graham Jarvis (Husaberg, UK), who put his stamp on almost all extreme events in 2011, his 20 year old fellow countryman Jonny Walker (KTM), three times Roof of Africa winner Chris Birch from New Zealand (KTM), Red Bull Romaniacs 2009 winner Andreas "Letti" Lettenbichler from Germany (Husqvarna) and Xavi Galindo from Spain (Husaberg) came to compete in the race.
The first edition of the spectacular Red Bull Sea to Sky Extreme Enduro in Kemer at the beautiful Turkish coast has been completed after two perfect days with optimal racing conditions. Most riders took a very strategic approach and decided to preserve energy and material on Saturday, and it was “all or nothing” on Sunday, which manifested in heated battles between the leading competitors and the high rate of drop-outs. Only 12 riders managed to see the finishing arc at the top of Mount Olympos and visit the god Zeus` popular hangout. Sunday`s Olympos Mountain Race was a true extreme Enduro delicacy, which took the riders to their very limits going from sea level to the top of the Olympos mountain. The excited comments of Birch, Jarvis, Letti and many others about the perfect setup, the well-distributed levels of difficulty and riding fun confirm the success for the organizers.
With the given meanness of our track managers and the perfect Enduro countryside (“Endurado II”) it was quite natural that only about 15% of the competitors made it to the top of the mountain. Those who arrived within the maximum riding time were awarded with a Red Bull Sea to Sky Gold medal. Those competitors that were able to make it all the way up to the tree line at an elevation of about 1.700m were awarded with a Silver medal, and those competitors that made it through the river section and the first sections of the forest at about 600m received a Bronze medal at the Sunday evening riders beach party.
Many had travelled long distances to participate in the Red Bull Sea to Sky and did not hesitate when they got invited by the team of the Red Bull Romaniacs. In exchange they experienced a new race concept for Extreme Enduro, a perfect execution and the security standards they expected from the team around Martin "Frejn" Freinademetz. “We are proud to have successfully completed the first edition of the Red Bull Sea to Sky and are looking forward to come back next year,” states Martin. “It would have been different without the warm hospitality of the city of Kemer and the tireless support of the local Kemer Enduro club!”
Graham Jarvis: “I am unbelievably happy and excited to be the first winner of this new race series, which has a great future!”
Chris Birch: "This is a fantastic event, I love it! The profile of the track is unique and spectacular; the execution like the perfect marking, the organization and the communication are world-class!”
Letti: “I just love this race – I think this is my new favorite! The variety of terrains and challenges combined with the scenic beach and mountain surroundings is unique in the world.”
